SPOTLIGHT
I have been in the veterinary medicine field in different positions over the last 24 years and have been a veterinarian since 2013. I have recently completed my Master of Public Health degree from LSU.
During this program, I began working with the Gulf South VECTOR collaborative through a master’s student internship applied experience on the Animal Welfare Committee serving to reach and engage animal health professionals in the Gulf South VECTOR mission. I have continued as a veterinary/public health committee member since my internship has ended.
This committee serves as an intersectoral and interdisciplinary team serving public health through a One Health approach. We collaborate to reach relevant stakeholders across professions and sectors to assess their respective training needs as to subsequently create and deliver training relative to vectors, vector-borne disease, and integrative pest management strategies. Vector borne disease and prevention are topics critical to human medicine, veterinary medicine, public health, and in integrated pest management. The One Health approach incorporates collaborative efforts between these professions and sectors. One Health training aimed at effectively addressing vectors and vector-borne disease through integrative vector management within these varying professions and sectors throughout the Gulf South region benefits both animal welfare and public health. I am excited to serve in such a capacity utilizing my veterinary medicine and public health training to promote health and wellness of both animals and people through this important mission.
