SPOTLIGHT
Anamika Sharma, Ph.D., joined Florida A&M University in 2022 as an urban entomologist, bringing her extensive expertise in insect ecology, biological control, and integrated pest management (IPM) to address the challenges of both urban and agricultural pests. Her current research focuses on fire ants, termites, mosquitoes, and other arthropod species in urban environments.
Since joining, Anamika has led and collaborated on multiple interdisciplinary projects funded by different agencies, including USDA and CDC. She plays an active role in the NextGen project, established in 2023 to support workforce development and provide training opportunities for minority students. She also contributes to the Termite Survey Group of North America (NATS), a collaborative network with Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, and several partner institutions focused on documenting termite diversity and distribution. Additionally, she is an engaged member of the Gulf South VECTOR that strengthens partnerships and promotes integrated pest management strategies to reduce vector-borne disease risks across the Gulf South.
Anamika teaches a suite of undergraduate and graduate courses—including urban entomology, medical entomology, forensic entomology, general entomology, and principles of environmental entomology—while mentoring students with interests in insect ecology and public health. Beyond research and teaching, Anamika is deeply committed to professional outreach. She regularly organizes symposia at Entomological Society of America meetings and leads the annual FAMU Entomology Field Day, providing continuing education and hands-on training opportunities for pest management professionals throughout Florida and the greater Gulf region.
