This presentation examines the biology and behaviour of the three dominant commensal rodent species in urban environments, Mus musculus, Rattus rattus, and Rattus norvegicus, through the world each species inhabits. Using video-recorded field observations, the talk explores how species-specific biology, neophobia, and route fidelity drive predictable patterns of pest control equipment detection, avoidance, and habituation. The central argument is that equipment avoidance is not random, it is rooted in rodent biology, and that understanding it leads to more informed placement, selection, and management strategy.
